Gerrit Rietveld designed the Utrecht armchair in 1935, for the Metz & Co department store in Amsterdam, orienting the design with a view to expanded distribution. The more market-oriented approach, focused on the values of comfort and relaxation, breaks down the elements, becoming an icon of the neoplastic movement and the Dutch architect’s experimental vision. Since 2015, this first example of an armchair without support feet has entered the Mutations program and is re-edited by Cassina as an anthropometric response to the generational growth spurt.
